PROJECT APPROACH

Investigation in Science helps children to:
  • predict outcomes
  • make plans and carry them out
  • develop new understandings
  • explore ideas and experiment first hand
  • explain observations
  • figure out how things work
Dramatic play allows children to:
  • explore their knowledge of adult rolesapply academic skills purposefully
  • collaborate with others
  • share and negotiate ideas
  • develop confidence in self expression
Field experiences:
  • involve the community in their learning
  • see interesting places first hand
  • collect information
  • learn about people at work
Language and literacy:
  • a home reading program recognizes the significant role parents have in children's language learning
  • children will be given an effective range of strategies for reading
  • writing and oral language are seen as important components of language learning
  • experience with a range of children's literature and information books
Muticulturalism and Social Studies:
  • we appreciate the rich diversity of cultures within Alberta
  • through literature, art, music and food we appreciate traditions and ceremonies
Math and Logic:
  • a focus on problem solving
  • use of manipulative materials
  • instruction in meaningful contexts
  • skills applied with a purpose
  • opportunities to practice
Dissemination of information:
  • we aim to make the processes of children's learning visible
  • we document the role of the adult and child in the learning process through work samples, pictures, photographs, text and diagrams
  • we share our understanding with families, students, teachers, and professionals interested in knowing more about young children
Integration of Fine Arts:
  • a special music program is offered by the Faculty of Education music staff
  • drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking are integral parts of our program
  • role play and creative dance help children personalize their understanding
Integration of children with special needs:
  • we believe in inclusive education
  • we have well qualified staff who will provide support for these special children
Environmental awareness:
  • the children learn how to take responsible care of their environment
  • we have an environmentally friendly classroom
Small group work:
  • provides instruction for different learning styles
  • facilitates discussion and exchange of ideas
  • recognizes the value of social interaction in learning
